USD headed to Elite Eight!

Wow. What a scene.
The USD women’s basketball team continued its remarkable hot streak Monday night, with a 61-49 win over MSU-Mankato in the championship game of the North Central Region Tournament.
With the win, USD advances to its first-ever Elite Eight Tournament, which will be held in Kearney, Neb., from March 26-29.
It’s a remarkable feat for [...]

What a weekend it’s been

This weekend is only half over, and already it’s been one of the best in USD athletics history.
Consider:

The USD women’s basketball team has hosted the North Central Region Tournament. The Coyotes (30-1) are one victory from an Elite Eight Berth.
Terry Liggins won a national title in the 60-meter hurdles at the Division II meet.
Emma Erickson [...]

That’s karma for you….

If the first game of the North Central Regional tournament told us anything, it was going to be a different day of basketball then what was expected. Wayne State came into the game against North Dakota with the Coyote game plan against UND in hand. Well, if you are going to pick a game plan, [...]

Women’s Regional: Day 1

Hey y’all. Since most of you probably won’t be attending this weekend’s North Central Region women’s basketball tournament, The Volante will provide daily logs. Enjoy.

The second you step into the DakotaDome, it’s like walking into NCAA Land. Banners, logos, men in suits everywhere. Speaking of which, I’m calling the Dome GenzlerDome [...]

Wednesday Night Surprise

OK, allow me to be the first person from The Volante to say this: What happened last night?
To be fair, I wasn’t at the game, but at this point does it matter? It was brutal, regardless of how far from Vermillion you were.
I’m not going to say anything anyone else isn’t thinking right now, but [...]

Welcome, Augieholics

As our religious friends from Augustana make their way down to Vermillion for tomorrow night’s basketball doubleheader against USD, let me be the first to welcome them to our humble abode.
Vermillion ain’t Sioux Falls by any means, but down here, we breed successful basketball teams. And right now, that’s what we Vermillionaires care about.
Yet, let [...]

USD women on some kind of roll

By virtue of Saturday’s 74-54 thumping of Minnesota-Duluth, the USD women’s basketball team has clinched a share of the North Central Conference regular season title.
The Coyotes need just one more win (or a North Dakota loss) to capture the outright conference title. The last time USD accomplished that feat was the 2002-2003 season, when the [...]

Commentary Unedited: Are the Coyote men Domebabies 2.0?

This is the full version of the Men’s Basketball Commentary that I wrote for the 2/20 issue of The Volante. I decided to put this up on the sports blog because it is a little more fleshed out than the one that ran. Some of my full points were cut due to space restraints in [...]

Coyote men remain third in North Central Region basketball poll

The North Central Region rankings came out yesterday and the USD men’s basketball team remained in the third spot behind Winona State and Northern State.
Here is a link to the rankings:

Eventually, I think the Coyotes will jump Northern State even if both teams keep winning. The Wolves squeaked out two wins last weekend, getting by [...]

Who’s better?

With the USD women’s basketball team’s 72-39 commanding victory over Minnesota-Duluth Thursday night in the DakotaDome, the Coyotes picked up their 16th straight win and maintained perfection in the North Central Conference.
But more importantly, to me anyway, is the fact that USD beat the Bulldogs by 33 points while getting off to one of their [...]
