Derek Miles makes Olympic Team

For the second time in his career, former USD pole vaulter Derek Miles earned a spot on the United States Olympic Track & Field team Sunday. Miles will now get to travel to Beijing, China to compete in the 2008 Olympic Games to compete in the pole vault.

This is Miles second time making the Olympic team. He made the United States Olympic Team in 2004, which was held in Athens, Greece. He finished seventh in the pole vault in the 2004 Olympics.

The Olympic Qualifiers took place in Eugene, Oregon this year. Miles finished with a vault of 19-0.25 to win the competition. He will be joined on the team by Brad Walker and former Olympian Jeff Hartwig. Both vaulters competed at the Derek Miles and Friends Invitational at USD earlier in the year.

Miles serves as an assistant coach for the USD track & field team.

I will get more on this story and try and talk to him about making the team.

    Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was lucky enough to vault against Derek in college. Always has been a class act, it is great to see him still doing well.
I think we have yet to see the best from Derek!
