Women’s Regional: Day 1

Hey y’all. Since most of you probably won’t be attending this weekend’s North Central Region women’s basketball tournament, The Volante will provide daily logs. Enjoy.

The second you step into the DakotaDome, it’s like walking into NCAA Land. Banners, logos, men in suits everywhere. Speaking of which, I’m calling the Dome GenzlerDome for the time being.

In the day’s first game, Wayne State (7th seed) pulled a huge upset of second-seed North Dakota. I’m talking HUGE upset.

The Wildcats won 85-78 behind 19 points from both Andrea Schoepf and Laquisha Cook.

Here’s what Wayne State head coach Ryun Williams had to say in his post-game conference:

“The bottom line was, our kids competed at a higher level. That’s what this tournament is all about. Our girls just went out and had fun; embraced the moment and competed like crazy.”

Ryun Williams, folks. Good coach.

Anyway, it was a nice way to get the tournament kicked off. You gotta love the 7-2 upset. Speaking of which, can the USD men do the same thing tomorrow? We’ll see.

In the day’s second first-round game, MSU-Mankato pulled another upset, defeating third-seed Concordia-St. Paul 73-70.

You remember Concordia? They’re the team to beat the USD women in last year’s regional (up in Grand Forks).

To be honest, I didn’t actually ‘watch’ most of this game. I was too busy taking advantage of the Internet in the Dome, aside from, you know, writing a story.

Hopefully one of my colleagues can update you on the final two games from Friday.

Check ya tomorrow from the GenzlerDome,

— Jeremy Hoeck
