Who’s better?

With the USD women’s basketball team’s 72-39 commanding victory over Minnesota-Duluth Thursday night in the DakotaDome, the Coyotes picked up their 16th straight win and maintained perfection in the North Central Conference.

But more importantly, to me anyway, is the fact that USD beat the Bulldogs by 33 points while getting off to one of their worst starts, trailed 6-2. The Coyotes did not play the starters and just one player who sees significant minutes for the final seven minutes of the second half and they still won by 33.

The almighty South Dakota State women’s basketball team defeated the Bulldogs 91-57 in Brookings Jan. 1. This great Bunnies basketball team that made it to the WNIT last year, this great Division I women’s basketball upstart powerhouse, this great team that is the best women’s basketball team in the state of South Dakota.

Oh, sorry about that. I read too many stories and saw too many on TV about how wonderful the Bunnies are and I’m hoping that the Coyotes get some of that much deserved attention this year as they are the best team in the Dakotas this year considering they’ve beaten Northern State, Augie and Mount Marty.

When I saw that the Bunnies played UMD, the first thing to cross my mind was how are the Coyotes going to match up with the Bulldogs? My second thought, due to brain washing by South Dakota media, was the Bunnies are really good and that was a huge victory against an NCC school.

But, I went onto the Internet and saw how bad UMD is and my mindset shifted to how big will the Coyotes hopefully blowout the Bulldogs at the end of January?

Lets break down how USD and SDSU faired against the Bulldogs:Margin of victory is 33 for USD, 34 for SDSU. Points scored, advantage SDSU. Points allowed, USD by 18 over what the Bunnies allowed UMD.

Largest lead during the game, advantage USD as the Coyotes went up 41 with 6 minutes and change left in the second half. The Bunnies got up 38 twice, both coming with 8 and 7 minutes left.

Defensively, besides from the obvious difference in the score, the Coyotes forced UMD into 26 turnovers, compared to 24 turnovers forced for the Bunnies. UMD shot 29.6 percent against the Coyotes, including an outstanding 10 percent from 3-point range, compared to 37.5 percent and 27.3 percent from 3 against the Bunnies.

SDSU hit 54 percent compared to 42 percent for the Coyotes against UMD, which wasn’t the best shooting performance for USD.

Comparing records this season, the Bunnies are 14-6 while USD is 18-1. Maybe that is why Aaron Johnston wanted to leave. Things aren’t quite as good for the Bunnies this year while the Coyotes are on what could very well be a national title run.

What does all this mean? Probably not a whole lot, but it is fun to know that USD’s women would run all over SDSU.

It’s a great day to be a Coyote! Hope to see you Saturday at the MSU-Mankato game.
