USD women rout Northern State 89-53

Thanks to another three-point shooting display and a swarming defense, the USD Coyotes women’s basketball team demolished Northern State 89-53 Saturday afternoon in Aberdeen, S.D.

This is a very good win for the USD women, because I don’t think many people expected USD to win by 36 points. The No. 19 Coyotes (11-1) have now won nine straight games and have fully established themselves as one of the best teams in the country.

For the game, the Coyotes made 14-of-27 three-pointers for 52 percent. It was their second straight with at least 14 three-point field goals. And on defense, USD recorded 15 steals and forced NSU into 21 turnovers.

How big was this win? Well, consider this…

In its tightest game all season, No. 1 North Dakota barely edged Northern State, 66-61 back on Nov. 20 in Aberdeen. The Fighting Sioux needed a clutch 3-pointer to defeat the Wolves, who held North Dakota to just 35 percent shooting.

And for the Coyotes to go into Aberdeen and hold down the same NSU squad that almost beat the No. 1 team in the country is a HUGE accomplishment. Needless to say, it’ll be a very interesting North Central Conference season.
