USD men move to 13-0

SIOUX FALLS — While home from break, I had the chance to attend both games for the USD men’s basketball team at the Sanford Clinic Holiday Classic, held at the Elmen Center in Sioux Falls.
After two more victories, I’m now even more convinced that this team is as good as the No. 3 ranking would [...]

Swimming and Diving Team Will Travel to Cali

As we sit around on the New Year’s Holiday and drink our champagne (okay, it is Vermillion, so I should say beer… ;) the USD Swimming and Diving Team will be catching a lot of sun in San Diego. Ah my jealousy. I have already asked coach Jason Mahowald if they [...]

USD women rout Northern State 89-53

Thanks to another three-point shooting display and a swarming defense, the USD Coyotes women’s basketball team demolished Northern State 89-53 Saturday afternoon in Aberdeen, S.D.
This is a very good win for the USD women, because I don’t think many people expected USD to win by 36 points. The No. 19 Coyotes (11-1) have now won [...]

Louie Legend sets S.D. scoring record

First, a disclaimer: Of all the nicknames we media types give athletes, the one affixed to Louie Krogman is by far my favorite. Louie Legend. Classic.
White River senior Louie Krogman scored 28 points Thursday night to break South Dakota’s all-time boys basketball scoring record. Krogman eclipsed former Lake Norden standout Don Jacobsen’s 50-year-old record of [...]

Wow, that was close

The USD football program came oh so close to losing another coordinator. This time, it could have been offensive headman Todd Hoffner.
Last Tuesday. Division III Wisconsin-Oshkosh passed on Hoffner and chose Pat Cerroni as its new head coach. Read this story in the Oshkosh Northwestern.
As Wisconsin-Oshkosh’s interim head coach last season, Cerroni guided the Titans [...]

Northern State will be a tough win for the USD Women

Saturday the 19th ranked USD women’s basketball team will travel up to Aberdeen to play the Northern State Wolves. The Wolves are 7-4 on the season. USD is 10-1 on the season. Just by looking at the records you would think USD should have control of this game. Think again. The Wolves are probably the [...]

Cain, (Jenna) Hoffman earn NCC honors

The USD Coyotes swept the North Central Conference Player of the Week honors, as announced by the league office today.
Tyler Cain of the No. 3 men’s basketball team won the NCC men’s honor for the second time this season. Cain, a sophomore forward, averaged 14.5 points, 10.0 rebounds and 4.5 blocks per game as USD [...]

USD Women crack Top 25; NCC screws up again.

After their trip to California and a couple more wins under their belt, the Coyote women finally cracked the top 25. When Tuesday’s poll came out, the women were ranked 22nd in the nation. Last week, the women missed the top 25 by 11 votes. The Coyotes trip to California must have swayed the voters, [...]

Peru State game notes

First of all, let me say this: I was really surprised to see USD students out en masse supporting the Coyote men’s basketball team in Sunday’s 86-39 rout of Peru State. Surprised might not be the right word. How about glad? Or proud?
Anyway, students were not only there watching the game, they were there disrupting [...]

Sure enough, USD is No. 3

Just as we speculated yesterday, the USD men’s basketball team did in fact climb to No. 3 in this week’s Division II coaches poll, released Tuesday afternoon.
Bentley (6-0) remained at No. 1, while Grand Valley State (8-0), USD (7-0), Rollins (5-0) and Winona State (8-1) round out the top five spots.
I won’t dwell on it [...]
