If I were a coach prepairing to face the Coyote Men’s Basketball team, here is the offense I’d run:
5 guards, all 3 feet outside of the 3-point line. No movement anywhere toward the paint. Ever. Period.
The scary thing is, Cain would probably still block a couple shots. He really is that good of a defender. This sophomore skyscraper has 28 blocks in 5 games on the season, including 9 in one game against Nebraska-Kearney.
That’s 5.6 blocks per game. Not only does Cain have 19 more blocks than the NCC’s second leading blocker (Minnesota State’s Mitch Gosson), he has more blocks than Nebraska-Omaha, North Dakota, and Augustana combined.
If Tyler Cain were a team, he’d have more blocks than any team in the North Central Conference. That is scary. Well, not for a USD fan, but for the rest of the NCC and Division II. Maybe The Sporting News had the right idea afterall.
Even if Cain blocks an average of 3 shots per game (He’ll probably do better than that) for the rest of the season, he’ll end up with 94. That’s 6 short of a c-note.
If he smacks down 94 on the year, he’ll have 140 blocks on his career. That would put him at only 42 short of Jeff Rau’s USD career record of 182 as a sophomore. By the way, Rau played all four years.
If Cain gets comfortable around the basket on the offensive end, I’ll have a new blue print for opposing offenses: Step onto basketball court, forfeit, get back on your bus, and go home.
