Ho hum, both USD basketball teams opened their regular seasons with 90-point performances and routs over teams they should have routed.

BUT, I will say this: the Mount Marty women are a very good NAIA team and the Dana men hung with the USD men throughout the first half.

Of course, all of that doesn’t matter.

The Coyote women got 21 points from Jeana Hoffman and beat MMC 91-73.

And the Coyote men got 21 points from Mitch Begeman and beat Dana 96-61.

I’ll go on record and say this: the USD men look scary good. I know it’s only one game against an NAIA school, but man, the depth and size of that team will post matchup problems with almost team they’ll face. The defense will only get better. It’ll take time for the newbies to adjust to the match-up zone style, but once they do, look out.

And, I’ll also say this: the USD student support at the men’s game was amazing. It blew my mind to see USD students standing up, cheering, and chanting. I give you guys credit. You came out in force and did your part. Whether or not you remember doing it is a whole other story.
