I was talking with Coach Meierkort today, and he said his team’s strength of schedule is “ridiculous”. While I agree with him, and I think in most cases it’s to a team’s benefit to take on a demanding schedule, I have to say that under this season’s circumstances, I may have wanted to schedule a few more cream puffs. I know that these schedules are made years in advance, so there was no way of knowing how strong the non-conference teams would be this year or, as a matter of fact, what kind of team USD would have.
However, I’m just saying that the Coyotes probably bit off a little more than than they can chew this season, even as they are prepping for Division I. Right now, the schedule for this year is looking tougher than some D-I schedules. For example, North Dakota flat-out dominated a I-AA team earlier this season. The talent between Division II and I-AA is not much different these days, and once USD ventures into D-I, they’re going to have cream puff games. Not every DI-AA game is going to be a North Dakota or a West Texas A&M.
Plus, I know Noah Shepard is a great QB, but for all intents and purposes, he has not even endured an entire football season in the starting role, which is another reason why this schedule was all the more daunting.
