A quick look around USD athletics in Saturday action:

- - Sophomore Ramsey Kavan finished second and helped the USD women’s cross country team qualify for nationals at the North Central Regional Championships, held Saturday at the Don Baker Memorial Course in Vermillion.

In her first regional competition as a Coyote, Kavan clocked a 6,000-meter time of 20:55.05 and finished behind only individual champion Tanya Gaurmer of Adams State (20:44.63). In all, USD had five women’s runners finish in the top 40. For the fifth time in seven years, the Coyote women’s team has qualified for nationals. And two years ago, the Coyotes finished eighth in the nation.

The Coyotes, ranked 23rd in the nation, scored 115 points for fourth place in the women’s championships. Adams State finished with 28 points to win its fifth regional crown in six years. Augustana finished in a tie for second in the team standings with Western State (86). After USD, North Dakota was fifth with 149 points. All five teams advance to nationals, which will be held in Joplin, Mo. on Nov. 17.

- - While watching the North Dakota hockey team on TV earlier tonight, the station said the USD women’s volleyball team had lost to UND, 3-0. Naturally, I was shocked. What? How does that happen? UND is probably the worst team in the North Central Conference.

Well, apparently, they had the score wrong. It was USD that won. The Coyotes defeated North Dakota 3-0 (30-13, 30-19, 30-12). As you can see by the game scores, USD flat-out dominated the Sioux. The win bumps the Coyotes’ record to 22-7 on the season, including a 5-5 conference mark.

USD will continue a four-match road swing with a match against St. Cloud State at 7 p.m. next Friday night. The Coyotes will then travel to No. 2 Minnesota-Duluth for their regular season finale at 4 p.m. next Saturday in Duluth, Minn.
