Coyote men gear up for Colorado State-Pueblo Classic

The USD men’s basketball teams first trip away from the comfort of the DakotaDome this season will feature a couple unknowns.
The Coyotes (5-0) will face the undefeated Regis Rangers (3-0) today (Friday) at 5 p.m. and Colorado State-Pueblo (1-3) at 9 p.m. Saturday as part of the Colorado State-Pueblo Classic in Pueblo.
The first unknown for [...]

This just in: Tyler Cain has blocked 2 more shots

If I were a coach prepairing to face the Coyote Men’s Basketball team, here is the offense I’d run:
5 guards, all 3 feet outside of the 3-point line. No movement anywhere toward the paint. Ever. Period.
The scary thing is, Cain would probably still block a couple shots. He really is that good of a defender. [...]

3 Coyote FB players named to region team

From a USD Sports Information press release:
Three players from the USD football team have been named to the Daktronics, Inc. Division II All-Northwest Region football team. Amos Allen and Christian Morton have been selected as first team members, while Tim Schneider was named to the second team.
No real shocker here as these were three of [...]

Homestand in review

For those of you who were gone over Thanksgiving break, you missed one hell of a men’s basketball weekend.
The seventh-ranked Coyotes (5-0) played four games in five days, including games Friday, Saturday and again Sunday.
Here’s a game-by-game recap of this weekend’s action:
Wednesday. USD 104, Chadron State 89: Coyote junior Dylan Grimsley scored 27 points and [...]

Cain blocks nine shots as USD men top UNK 79-68

Tyler Cain’s performance in Saturday night’s win over Nebraska-Kearney may cause opposing teams to rethink their offensive game plans.
Cain, a 6-foot-8 sophomore forward for the University of South Dakota, blocked a school-record nine shots in the Coyotes’ 79-68 victory Saturday night in the finale of the two-day DakotaDome Classic.
Cain’s defensive effort came in a game [...]

USD men defeat Truman State 69-46 in defensive battle

Having scored 96 and 104 points in its first two games, the USD men’s basketball team had relied on its potent offensive attack.
However, Friday night, it was the Coyote defense that led the way.
The Coyotes (3-0) — ranked seventh in the nation — used a balanced 11-man rotation to hold off Truman State 69-46 Friday [...]

USD men too much for Chadron State, win 104-89

Watching the Chadron State men’s basketball team warm up before Wednesday’s game against USD inside the Dome, I noticed one major thing: that team is short and quick.
Chadron’s tallest player is 6-foot-7, while USD’s starting five went 6-5, 6-6, 6-6, 6-8 and 6-11. Talk about mismatches.
Evidently, the Chadron State speed got to the Coyote men [...]

USD earns 5 NCC FB 1st teamers

In an announcement earlier this week, the USD Coyotes football team earned five players on the All North Central Conference first team.
Senior running back Amos Allen, senior wide receiver Brooks Little, senior center Christian Morton and senior left tackle Tim Schneider were all named All-NCC first team offensive selections. Senior outside linebacker Justiss Scales [...]

Begeman named NCC player of the week

After a career-best performance in the season opener, USD’s Mitch Begeman has been named North Central Conference Co-Player of the Week. The announcement came this morning from the league office in Sioux Falls.
First off, the NCC continues its ridiculous trend of naming co-players of the week. Seriously, there are seven teams in the conference; make [...]

Season openers = Routs

Ho hum, both USD basketball teams opened their regular seasons with 90-point performances and routs over teams they should have routed.
BUT, I will say this: the Mount Marty women are a very good NAIA team and the Dana men hung with the USD men throughout the first half.
Of course, all of that doesn’t matter.
The Coyote [...]
