USD Football Nuggets

As we look ahead to Saturday’s matchup between the USD Coyotes (4-3, 3-1 NCC) and Augustana (3-5, 1-4 NCC), here are a few football-related nuggets for you to enjoy:
— — USD senior Amos Allen isn’t just leading Division II in rushing yards, he’s leading ALL divisions in rushing yards. His 1,209 yards is 24 yards [...]

Volleyball team ties single season win mark

As I was getting ready to send out the sports pages tonight, I saw that the USD women’s volleyball team defeated MSU-Mankato 3-1 in Mankato, Minn.
That gives USD 18 wins this season, tying the single season win mark which has been set four times.
For as much pub as we at The Volante give this team, [...]

Men’s Hoops: From No. 1 to No. 16?

Let the confusion begin.
Remember last week when the USD men’s basketball team was ranked No. 1 in The Sporting News magazine preseason Division II poll?
Remember how surprised we all were upon hearing the news?
Well, apparently the Division II Bulletin sees things a little differently.
In the publication’s 2007 preseason top 25 ranking, USD was ranked [...]

USD 24, WWU 10 - postgame

I don’t know what it is about Dakota Days games, but the Coyote football team has a tendency not to play it’s best on its homecoming game.
In 2004, USD defeated in-state rival Augustana 23-0.
In 2005, it was USD over MSU-Mankato 35-14 despite the Coyotes committing 5 turnovers.
And last year (2006), USD needed a late fourth [...]

USD has 112th toughest schedule

We all knew the Coyotes would play a tough schedule in 2007. Heck, through six games, it’s painfully obvious how difficult it is.
But according to Kenneth Massey’s ratings, USD has the 112th toughest schedule in the nation. That’s not just in Division II. That’s in the ENTIRE country.
That’s right. USD’s schedule is statistically more challenging [...]

USD men’s hoops ranked No. 1 in preseason poll

According to The Sporting News magazine, the USD men’s basketball team is the No. 1 team in the nation.
That coming from the magazine’s 2007-2008 men’s college hoops preview edition.
So, let me get this straight: the Coyotes are the TOP team in the nation?
That’s a lot of pressure for a team already looking to defend its [...]

USD is No. 6 in Northwest Region?

In the first Northwest Region rankings today, the USD Coyotes football team was ranked No. 6.
Why? We at The Volante aren’t sure. But we’ll take it.
The Coyotes (3-3, 2-1 NCC) are one of SIX North Central Conference teams that are ranked in the top 12.
Here’s the top 12
1. Nebraska-Omaha (5-0)
2. North Dakota (6-0)
3. Grand Valley [...]

3-3? Umm…yeah

NOTE: Pardon the light bitterness.
Although I picked the Coyote football team to beat Central Washington, I was (secretly) afraid this could happen.
The pass defense hasn’t stepped up this year - aside from the Duluth game. That’s been the Achilles heel for this team over the past two three seasons. We’ve all seen that, yes, [...]

Congrats to USD Volleyball

You want to prove you’re for real, you beat the best.
If you haven’t heard, click here.
That’s exactly what the Coyote volleyball team did tonight against Augustana. Augie is perennially one of the, if not the, best team in the NCC. They stepped up and beat them, even when Augie fans outnumbered the Coyote Crazies in [...]

How strong is the NCC?

First of all, whaddya think of the new blog picture? Bunch of bad asses, huh?
- - - - - - - - - - - -
We’ve all heard the phrase, “the North Central Conference is the top-to-bottom the best conference in the nation.”
Well, this season, the 9-team football league has proven its strength.
Consider these games:

USD [...]
