Just got back from the game in Sioux Falls, and I must say, it was a PERFECT day for an outdoor football game. It’s Oct. 20 and it actually felt hot. No offense to the DakotaDome, but a Saturday afternoon outdoor game is where it’s at.
Oh yeah, the game. The Coyotes easily handled Augustana 38-17 in a game that featured eight turnovers (three by USD). So, the game could have been more of a blowout.
Senior running back Amos Allen, the nation’s leading rusher, ran for 260 yards and three touchdowns. He made the Vikings defense look flat-out horrible, eluding tackle after tackle. After the first quarter, Allen had 114 yards rushing, and 189 at halftime.
Facing a freshman back-up quarterback (Tyler Schulte), the USD defense recorded four interceptions, a fumble recovery and a blocked punt.
There was a period in the first half where six plays resulted in four interceptions.
But the Coyote lead was never really in jeopardy. You could tell USD was by far the most talented and loaded team on the field. It was the Coyotes’ sixth-straight win over Augustana in what could have been the last meeting between the two schools.
As they always do, the Augustana student section was sporting T-shirts mocking USD. This year’s edition was a black shirt which said “It Sucks To Be U.” Very creative guys, hope you didn’t waste too much time on those.
