USD Football Nuggets

As we look ahead to Saturday’s matchup between the USD Coyotes (4-3, 3-1 NCC) and Augustana (3-5, 1-4 NCC), here are a few football-related nuggets for you to enjoy:

— — USD senior Amos Allen isn’t just leading Division II in rushing yards, he’s leading ALL divisions in rushing yards. His 1,209 yards is 24 yards ahead of Chadron State’s Danny Woodhead (who is the NCAA all-division career rushing leader). And Allen is 131 yards ahead of Michigan’s Mike Hart

“It’s shocking to me when I really stop and think about it,” Allen said Wednesday. “I can’t believe it. But I really don’t think about it much. I just have to keep it going.”

— — Last week against Western Washington, the USD defense recorded seven sacks. With that effort, the Coyotes went from 12 total team sacks to 19. That’s a 37 percent increase. Pretty impressive.

Said senior Zach Johnson: “It shows what we’re capable of. I feel so much better after last week; as good as I’ve felt all year.”

On the season, Johnson has recorded 4.0 sacks, while teammate has the team high with 4.5.

— — Saturday’s game between the Coyotes and Vikings will be shown live on KELO-TV. The broadcast will begin at 1 p.m. with Jay Elsen calling the play-by-play. So even if you can’t come to the game in Sioux Falls, you can still watch the Coyotes on TV.

— — After a sizzling start to the season, sophomore quarterback Noah Shepard has kind of cooled off the last three games. In that span, he’s completed 33-of-71 passes for 530 yards, with three touchdowns and three interceptions.

If Shepard is to regain his candidacy for the Harlon Hill award, he’ll have to pick up the pace. But at this point, Amos Allen might be the North Central Conference favorite for the award.
