We’ve all heard the phrase, “the North Central Conference is the top-to-bottom the best conference in the nation.”

Well, this season, the 9-team football league has proven its strength.

Consider these games:

  • USD nearly came back to beat then No. 24 West Texas A&M, losing 55-45
  • Western Washington (the LAST place team in the NCC) defeated DI-AA UC-Davis 28-21, in Davis’ home opener in their brand new stadium.
  • MSU-Mankato hung with DI-AA Northern Iowa for three quarters before getting rolled 41-14
  • Nebraska-Omaha beat No. 2 Northwest Missouri State 25-21 in Omaha, Neb.
  • North Dakota routed DI-AA Southern Utah 37-10 in Cedar City, Utah. Remember, Southern Utah is in the Great West Football Conference - a league UND and USD will join next year.
  • And of course, USD trounced Winona State (a D-II playoff team in 2006) 49-28

In the most recent AFCA Division II Coaches Poll, there were three NCC schools ranked in the top 25:

  • No. 2 - North Dakota (5-0)
  • No. 6 - Nebraska-Omaha (5-0)
  • No. 22 - USD (3-2)

I think that’s reason enough to say the NCC is easily the strongest conference in the country.
